Revise a published course
Correct a published course without changing its version, or publish a new version when people need to complete the learning again. The choice affects saved progress, completion, and the completion window for assigned learners.
Update a published course
Edits to a published course are saved as a draft. Learners continue to see the published course until you select Publish. Contributors and Administrators can revise courses.
Choose whether to start a new version
- Keep the current version for a correction to the same learning, such as a typo or broken link.
- Publish a new version when learners need to complete revised learning or an assessment again. A new process everyone must learn is one example.
Changing Require all answers correct to complete always requires a new version, whether you turn the rule on or off.
Correct the current version
- Open Account menu, then Manage content or Manage organization. Under Content, open the course.
- Make your changes in the lesson, question, or Course details.
- In Details → Publishing, leave Publish a new version and start a new completion window unchecked.
- Resolve any Before publishing items. Wait for the draft to save, then select Publish.
- Open the published course to check the correction.
Existing progress stays with this version and its lessons. If you are correcting an existing lesson, edit it in place rather than deleting and replacing it.
Some changes still affect completion. A new lesson has no previous completion record, so learners must finish it for the course to count as complete. Editing quiz questions does not reliably require learners to retake the quiz; publish a new version if that is the goal.
Publish a new version
A new version applies to the whole course. Consider learners already taking it and whether its assigned audience needs the revised learning now.
- Finish the draft lessons, quiz, and Course details.
- In Details → Publishing, select Publish a new version and start a new completion window.
- Resolve any Before publishing items, then select Publish.
- Confirm the new version in the editor and check the published course.
Publishing increases the version number by one. Selecting the option or saving the draft does not release the new version.
What learners will see
Everyone sees the new published version, including people who found the course on their own. Earlier lesson completions and quiz attempts remain on record, but they do not count toward completion of the new version. Learners who finished the earlier version must complete the new one; learners partway through it start the new version’s learning. If someone still has an old page open, Fieldbook asks them to reload before recording more progress.
Existing audience links continue to assign the course. Assigned learners receive a new completion window under the organization’s current rules; people taking the course independently do not receive an assignment window.
The assignment system calculates due dates. Turning due dates off hides deadlines, but does not remove an assignment or complete the new version. See Due dates and Course assignments for details.
Discard unpublished changes
Select Revert to published version and confirm to replace the draft with the current published content. This does not create a version or change learner progress.
If a save fails or another session has conflicting changes, use the recovery controls in The editor. Download open changes first if you need to keep them.
