Course assignments

Administrators assign published courses to the organization, teams, or learning groups, directly or through curricula. Each course counts once per learner; overlapping sources and saved progress are preserved.

An assignment adds a published course to a learner’s For you and assigned learning. Administrators can assign courses; Contributors can publish them but cannot change assignments. Published courses remain available to all admitted readers, including those who are not assigned. Progress made before assignment is retained, and valid completion of the current published version counts. Optional courses do not affect assigned-course completion.

Assign a course

  1. Open Account menu → Manage organization → Content and open a published course.
  2. Under Details → Audience, select Edit audience.
  3. Choose Organization for all registered users, including future users, or Specific teams or groups. Search and select the intended audiences; Team and Group labels distinguish them.
  4. Select Review changes. Check which audiences are added or removed and which learners gain or lose the assignment. Open View people and due dates, or View people when due dates are off, for the details.
  5. Select Save assignments. Use Back to correct the selection before saving.

Assignments save separately from course edits. Unpublished course edits and saved learning progress remain in place. If you close the picker with unsaved changes, Fieldbook asks whether to discard them.

You can also assign published courses from Content bulk actions, a published curriculum’s Edit audience, or a learning group’s Assigned Courses. These routes use the same selection and review flow. Bulk additions keep other assignments; bulk removals remove only the selected direct team or group links.

How assignment sources work

A course can be assigned directly to a team or learning group, or through a curriculum assigned to an audience. A team includes its descendant teams. A learning group can include linked teams and individual members.

Each course counts once per learner, even when several sources assign it. Adding or removing a source while another remains does not restart the assignment or change its saved deadline. Removing the last source ends the assignment, but keeps course progress and completion history. Assigning the course again later starts a new assignment period. A valid completion of the current version still counts.

In the audience picker, Included means another selected team, group, or curriculum already covers that audience. Saved separately marks a direct link that remains alongside wider coverage. Use Keep an audience independently when that link should continue if the wider source is removed later. A group with no newly included learners can still cover future members.

To remove a direct assignment, reopen the course’s audience picker and deselect its team or group. For a course Assigned through curriculum, change the curriculum’s audience or remove the course from that curriculum. Review which learners actually lose the assignment; another source may still cover them.

If Also include public guests is available, it adds the configured guest recommendation group. Guest browsing has no account-tracked completion or due dates; registered members of that group are included.
